National History Day needs judges

REENACTORS! The Cleveland History Center of the Western Reserve Historical Society needs judges for the 2016 National History Day Contest!

If you have judged for History Day in past years, we needn't explain the value of this annual event in getting intermediate and secondary students connected to the study of history. Newcomers to the judging process will find it to be a rewarding opportunity to witness first-hand the impressive work being done in the area's public, private, and parochial schools.

Volunteering as a History Day judge will entail your presence at the Region 3 contest on Saturday, March 5th. Following a brief orientation, judging teams of three members each will disperse to evaluate student papers, websites, performances, documentaries, and exhibits at various sites in the Cleveland History Center of the Western Reserve Historical Society or on the campus of Case Western Reserve University.

During or following a lunch provided by Cleveland History Center, judges will complete their evaluation forms and confer with other teams in their category to select the finalists for the state competition. Judges are invited, though not required, to attend the afternoon awards program.

Birney's Division and ANV host Civil War tactical

This is how you start the 2016 Civil War reenacting season right! Birney’s Division and the ANV will be hosting an old West Virginia-style tactical in Perryopolis, PA on April 29 – May 1, 2016. This is a NON-SPECTATOR event.

A "West Virginia" style tactical is a judged, unit-based, multi-layered series of problem solving scenarios in addition to engagements with enemy forces. CIVILIANS play a MAJOR part in these scenarios! Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry and civilians are all welcome.

Perryopolis is a GO!

Ok. Here is the news on Perryopolis. The event is NOT (I repeat NOT) cancelled. The ground is completely dry and the weather may be a bit cloudy Saturday (and clear on Sunday) but it will not impact the area. Please spread this information far and wide! Perryopolis is just down the road!

Birney's Division will host the annual Civil War Reenactment in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania October 3-4. We are looking to turn out a great number of our troops in what is considered one of the best events in the Fall. Make sure to let your company commanders and battalion adjutants know what your numbers look like. This is a great time for the entire family.

2nd Battalion Drill this weekend

This Saturday starting at 8:30 am is the annual Birney's Division 2nd Battalion Drill. The link below is for the tentative agenda for the weekend. We have plans for rain or shine but the pavilion is perfect for under-cover classes. We are asking for a $5 fee to cover the cost of a port-a-john and the remainder going to the Lodge (owners of the site) as a donation. As Sunday is Mother's Day, we will be dismissing early on Sunday (10 am) to allow folks to get home and spend time with those special women in their lives. Come on out and get the rust off of that rifle and the funk off of the wool. See you there!
